3v2 +1 Vertical Transition Game
Simple possession activity with a focus on passing the ball forward, linking with the free player to score.
Description:
The Red team aims to keep possession looking for an opportunity to pass the ball to their target teammate who can either turn and score in the two small goals or lay off to an onrushing teammate to score, while the Blue team works to win the ball back.
Set-up:
Set up a grid with sides 20 x 20 yards. Place two small goals 10 yards from the grid as shown above.
Divide teams into 2 teams of 4. Defending team players rotate each rep. The target attacking player rotates every round.
Players work for a total of 6 Rounds (Rotating from defensive team to attacking team each round) - 2 minute each rep.
If the ball goes out of play, the coach plays a new ball in.
Progressions:
Add touch limit on Target Player - 1 touch only.
Add an additional Blue defender to pressure the Red Target player - 3v2 +1v1.
Coaching Points:
Movement - How can you create space for you and your teammates? Where can you move to create passing angles?
Body Position - Is your body position protecting the ball from the opposition? What could you do to make sure you are protecting the ball?
Passing - Can you move the ball quickly to take advantage of the 3v2 situation? Quick interchanges - one-twos etc.
Lay offs - Can the target player have quality in their layoffs? Can you play a ball to your teammates that they can play first time?
